Rain – Sleet – Snow!

30th January 2018

Firstly – apologies – today’s photo is particularly bad – No viz at altitude and pretty windy plus lots of rain and no views in the glen… It was a ‘three pairs of gloves’ day and I was literally running with water as I came off the hill.

‘What’s the problem?’ I can hear you locals say – well I’m Cairngorm based and over there we prefer our precipitation frozen!

I eventually found precipitation in my preferred state (snow) but needed to go pretty high. The rate of snowfall did increase this afternoon and will continue into the evening but at higher elevations only. By tomorrow however I get my wish and the freezing level will lower with the precipitation turning increasingly to snow at all levels. Staying fairly windy though so there’s going to be a significant amount of drifting – stay switched on out there!

No viz at 900m just strong winds and blowing ice particles…with spindrift on the lens!
