Hazard frozen icy snow.

31st March 2022

Cold conditions will maintain a firm and icy snowpack giving serious consequences in the event of an uncontrolled slip or fall. Crampons and ice axe along with the skill to use them are essential for any form of snow travel due to the unforgiving nature of the snow at present. Some new snow is forecast but amounts are not expected to be great. This may form unstable isolated areas of windslab which could be the cause of an uncontrolled slip. Fresh cornices, if they form, will be fragile.

Slips and falls on snow and ice form a major hazard in Scottish mountains often with the most dire consequences, recognise your limitations and don’t be sheepish to back off if you are getting out of your depth, there is always another day, the hills will wait.
