163mph gust !

22nd January 2024

Not so much “calm after the storm” today. More the continuing wildness as the tail end of Isha clung on through the day. Glencoe mountain reported recording a gust of 163mph on the summit last night. Similar gusts were reported in the Cairngorms and on Aonach Mor.

It was a struggle to get high on the mountain today, but I managed to get up to around 800 metres, which was useful, as I could witness significant drifting high on the hill. Windslab was building quickly on steep wind sheltered locations on North through to East aspects at altitude. Tomorrow, during the day, there will be heavy rain and temperatures will rise well above the summits, and this is likely to cause avalanches in this fresh windslab. Please see the main forecast for details.
