A Day for Amphibians

21st February 2025

A challenging day to be out in the mountains. Even at lower elevations, care was required in the heavy and persistent rain, swelling burns and rivers into spate conditions and strong buffeting gale force Southerly winds. At higher elevations storm force gusts in excess of 90mph reported over Meall a Bhuiridh. Through the murk of heavy rain the continued thaw having stripped all but snow patches in gullies and around coire rims and gully tops to above mainly 850 metres.

A little more showery tomorrow, though still heavy rain at times, cooler temperatures and the possibility of a little snow on the highest summits, but not significant amounts.

Burns in spate and waterfalls full from Coire nan Beith, with only snow patches remaining on the North-East aspect of Stob Coire nam Beith.

North-East aspects of Stob Coire nan Lochan, most significant snow patches now above 850 metres.

Only thin ribbons in Coire na Tuliach blending with the swollen Allt Coire na Tulaich.

Sron a Creise and Stob a Ghlais Coire.

The flood from Coire Gabhail, not commonly seen on the flats except during persistent and prolonged rain and periods of significant thaw. Snow patches remaining on the head wall and Lost Valley crags.

One of the local amphibians happily avoiding the swollen burns and rivers.

Thanks for the photo of the flooded Coire Gabhail, it brought back memories. In April 1970 I was camping as one of a school group on the flat grass in the middle of your photo. We heard some noise in the night but were surprised when we woke up and looked out to see we were on an island.

David, thanks for your message. Certainly something to catch out the unwary.
