First day of Spring.

1st March 2025

The first of March is the first day of meteorological Spring. After a bit of a damp start this morning, the weather cleared up quite nicely. With light winds and relatively mild temperatures it felt quite spring like, particularly during periods of sunshine.

The crags of Coire an Lochan. When in good condition they provide some classic winter climbing due in part to the steep but positive nature of the rock, the abundance of frozen turf, and the ability for ice to form rapidly during thaw freeze cycle. Unfortunately, conditions have not been correct for ice formation here this winter, and the turf is currently not at all well frozen.

The view towards Bidean Nan Bian from the top of Coire Nan Lochan.

Looking over to the summit of Stob Coire an Lochan from the top of the crags.

The view down Dorsal Arete, a classic easier grade winter route, and on down to the floor of Glen Coe far below.

Meanwhile over in the ski area they were producing artificial snow today. Real snow (as in something akin to what naturally falls from the sky) is actually very hard to produce in meaningful quantities. What is actually produced is more akin to ice chipping. Although not lovely powder, they do provide something to slide on, and there were plenty of people out enjoying a bit of sledging, skiing and snowboarding as part of the Glen Coe Gathering event today.

Looking over to the top of the summit tow on Meall a Bhuiridh with the summit just beyond. I waited here for while in the hope that it would clear and I would get views over to Clach Leathad, but unfortuately it didn’t.

Looking back up the main basin, trying to clear.

By the time I got back to the top of the access chairlift it had cleared up nicely.
