The Northern Guardian

9th March 2025

With very little snow to consider and a warm, dry and sunny day, today was about views to aspects less easily seen from the main routes in the Glen. The northern guardian of the area is Garbh Bheinn, not quite a munro but will all the same effort or more required to summit, with views in every direction, notably the northern aspects and corries of the Aonach Eagach.

With a summit (867m) temperature around 7c the snow patches will again have been thawing and diminishing. It appears that not much usable snow remains in the area.

Overnight sees a change with a return to sub zero temperatures on the summits, the freezing level down to around 500 metres during the day. However, with it remaining dry there will be no change in cover. Any remaining patches, refreezing and becoming firm. With a northerly airflow this will likely continue into the middle of the week.

The Aonach Eagach with the north Meall Garbh spur and Sgorr nam Fiannaidh

The North-Easterly Coire Corcaig below Sgorr nam Fiannaidh with only isolated snow patches remaining.

The distant Sgorr Dhearg above Ballachulish and the Pap, Sgorr na Ciche.

Clearly, the ‘Notched Ridge’ with the highest Glencoe summits behind. Isolated patches on these Northerly aspects.

Must be spring.
