The Same But So Different

10th March 2025

Today was very much the same with only very patchy snow cover and extensive bare ground. Despite the so notably different ‘colder’ conditions, it remained dry with no new snow except for the lightest and briefest of countable flakes drifting around in the moderate to fresh North-Easterly winds.

With good visibility into the usual corries and gullies there was an opportunity to review the remaining snow patches before heading higher. With the freezing level being around 900 metres, the existing snow patches had begun to refreeze with a breakable crust at most elevations. Fresh to strong winds were from the North-East.

Whilst most patches are generally too small it was good to chat with groups still able to use the largest for introductory winter skills.

Tomorrow continues very much the same, though with a dusting of snow expected in the afternoon, amounts however will not be significant.

The back of the ‘Lost Valley’, whilst not extensively covered care is required on especially descents, in this case below the bealach, as they refreeze and become firm in the colder conditions.

Around a 100m stripe remaining at the back of Coire na Tulaich.

A group working on one of the larger patches to give some perspective. Only the lightest and briefest of countable flakes drifting (unlikely ‘ blizzarding’) around in the moderate to fresh North-Easterly winds.

Kicking steps through the breakable crust at around 900 metres.
