Cold, Dry and Sunny

5th January 2026

A clear, dry and very cold day with temperatures remaining sub zero at all elevations. Sunny across the summits and onto lower aspects as the topography allowed some brief rays. Light North-Westerly winds at higher elevations keeping any pauses in activity short to avoid becoming chilled. The temperature around 900 metres minus 5 Celsius around midday. Lots of people about on Buachaille Etive Beag with very social able weather. Some overnight new snow but very little change with only localised deposits of deeper accumulations with unstable soft windslab.

Snow showers overnight with some heavy snowfall during the day tomorrow, though at times fluctuations in the freezing level going as high as 800 metres briefly. Generally winds will be from the south-west veering later in the afternoon, fresh to strong.

The west face of Aonach Dubh first thing this morning.

Early sun on Stob Coire nan Locahan, some deeper accumulations at higher elevations nearer the summit, sheltered hollows, gully tops and coire rim.

A ribbon of sunshine along the Aonach Eagach Ridge, with conversely a shady and frozen glen.

Stone cairn presenting nicely the overall snow cover across the area with most accumulations on easterly aspects. Plenty of walkers out today, enjoying the cold but sunny peaks, a sociable Stob Coire Raineach, Buachaille Etive Beag.

Extensive sunshine around the summits. Views towards Stob Dubh on Buachaille Etive Beag, Stob Coire Sgreamhach, Bidean nam Bian and Stob Coire nan Lochan. Most deeper accumulations above 900 metres.

Panorama round most of the forecast area. Buachaille Etive Beag, northwards round to Buachaille Etive Mor.
