Snow Filling In and Drifting
6th January 2026
Today was initially dry following the overnight snow which had fallen at all elevations. During the morning there was more sustained rain and snow at higher elevations as the freezing level fluctuated, initially around 400 metres rising to around 800 metres. Not the worst but fairly blizzard conditions around the summit of Meall a Bhuiridh making conditions quite unpleasant. Summit temperatures around minus 2 Celsius in the morning.
Definitely more snow in the area today with fresh deposits at all elevations on most aspects, but most still landing on soft unconsolidated snow or bare ground. Deeper accumulations and drifting, with poorly bonded windslab has formed on North through East to South-East aspects above 850 metres but areas were not extensive, the greatest hazard being where these accumulations have formed on the localised areas of old frozen snow.
More snow overnight and through the day, colder and drier Wednesday night into Thursday.
What a difference a day makes, low cloud, snow and poor visibility. Looking over Loch Atriochtan up the ‘Glen’.
West face of Aonach Dubh with clearly more snow than yesterday but overall no significant accumulations.
North-West aspects down Meall a Bhuiridh, new snow filling in between rocks and boulders and wind sheltered pockets and hollows, scouring on wind exposed rocks.
Deeper drifts in places, this on a north aspect at about 850 metres. Walking really quite challenging today with each step a pot luck of soft snow through to ice/rock/hole/grass/flat/sloped….
Not immediately obvious but, by lunchtime lower aspects had definitely started to thaw and diminish. Raining below 650 metres.
A glimpse of the ‘Sisters’ still looking whiter this afternoon whilst heading back down the glen in thawing conditions.
