Braw Day

21st March 2022

Another cold start to the day with firm and icy snow in many locations, and some verglas on the path. The snow surface softened slowly where exposed to the sun at high elevations, but in the North facing coires the snow remained firm and consequential in the event of an uncontrolled slide.

Little change is expected tomorrow in terms of stability with a predominately well bonded and stable spring snowpack. The freezing level will lie above the summits for the next forecast period resulting in a softening of the snow surface on all aspects and elevations. Winds will be moderate to fresh with slowly thawing conditions.

Bidean nam Biam and Church Door Buttress (right) with the Three Sisters visible through the col. Plenty of snow cover high up above 900 metres.

Looking over to the Aonach Eagach, largely devoid of snow (on this side at least).

Stob Coire nam Beith with Summit Gully visible just right of centre. Zoom in and you may be able to make out a single soloist.

Steps emerging from Summit Gully, Stob Coire nam Beith. Firm snow, but a joy to climb with the prerequisite skill set.
