Wild, wet morning but improving

22nd February 2017

Grim conditions to leave the roadside but the rain showers became snow and eased and it started to feel more wintry.  The occasional gust of wind would rip through lifting the loose snow into very temporary blizzard conditions but the sun broke through by early afternoon for short periods as the cloud lifted.

A first glimpse of the sun looking down on the lower areas of the East ridge of Meall a Bhuiridh

In places the fresh snow had done no more than fill in the old boot marks in the old snowpack but there were localised areas of windslab in the larger sheltered drifts.

Plenty of evidence of cracking in the surface layers of the cold, dry snowpack

The Eastern extension of the Aonach Eagach ridge had greater deposits of snow than Sgorr nam Fiannaidh, just visible at the Western end of the ridge.
